NFA Arrests Three Over Mabira Forest Destruction

The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has arrested three key individuals linked to the illegal clearance of Mabira Forest in Buikwe District. Those arrested include Joseph Ecima, a Forest Supervisor, and patrolmen Mwebaze David (Abdul) and Matsiko Winston.

Their arrest follows media reports alleging collusion between NFA officials and industrial players in illegal logging, charcoal burning, and land leasing for cultivation—violations under the National Forestry and Tree Planting Act (2003). Acting NFA Executive Director Stuart Maniraguha ordered investigations, leading to the arrests.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Francis Olugu confirmed the charges, stating, “The suspects face criminal neglect of duty, and further investigations may lead to additional charges under Uganda’s Anti-Corruption and Penal Code Acts.”

NFA spokesperson Aldon Walukamba urged public vigilance, saying, “We are committed to protecting our forests and will hold all violators accountable. These arrests send a strong message.” He also called on citizens to report illegal activities via the toll-free line 0800264036, adding, “Together, we can prevent further destruction of our invaluable forests.”

The crackdown follows the recent arrest of 68 suspects in Mabira, with 40 already charged. Authorities have also impounded 29 timber and charcoal transport vehicles, 100 motorcycles, and 60 power saws. Additionally, NFA is working to revoke over 700 illegal land titles in forest reserves.

Mabira Forest, spanning 29,964 hectares, is vital for climate regulation, water conservation, and air purification. “This forest is a crucial asset, and its destruction affects us all,” Walukamba emphasized. NFA remains committed to its protection, warning that those violating conservation laws will face legal action.
